The California Coast – the Pacific Ocean – has some of the best scenes there is for the artist or for the photographer.

The Best Scenic Drive

To be honest, starting at about Los Angeles County, the coastal beauty scene-wise if not all that great to see. To be sure, visiting places like Venice Beach is fantastic and fun. However, the attraction there is not the scenic coast but rather the people. Varied and different is about the best way to describe the Venice Beach Scene.

Driving north from there on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway Highway 1 and 101) the coastal scenery improves as you leave the hustle and bustle of the big city behind. Malibu is OK, but there are places where the houses on the beach are so dense you can hardly see or get to the beach. If your goal is to see beautiful coastal scenery, the fun really starts at about the Ventura and Los Angeles County line.

Continue North on the Coastal Highway

Going north on the coastal highway from there on, the scenery gets better and better. There are times when the coastal highway goes inland a little, but following it will eventually lead back to the coast. There are also times where intersections come up and you can choose to follow a road inland or you can stay on the coastal highway. By all means, stay on the coastal highway.

As you drive farther north, the spectacular beauty keeps improving. In the mid-state area and farther north you go through areas such as Big Sur, across the famous Bixby Bridge, and so forth. As far a scenic drives go, this is one of the world’s best and should certainly be done in your lifetime.

The opportunities for the painter and photographer are endless. Allow adequate time for the road trip because I can guarantee you will be stopping all the time.
