Tioga Pass is probably one of the best scenic drives in the world. It sort of runs along the tops of the mountains above the Yosemite Valley. When you are on Tioga Pass, you are atop the Yosemite Valley area and among all the water and snow melt that feeds some of those beautiful waterfalls you see when you visit Yosemite.

Lakes, meadows, rivers, mountains, snow and more

It is a photographer’s and a painter’s paradise. There is so many different topographies there to photograph or paint, it is exhausting. Depending upon the time of year you visit, you can see all of the above. Grassy meadows filled with new streams and ponds created by the freshly melted snow and distant mountain peaks covered with deep snow. It truly is beautiful.

But don’t head there right now

As I write this blog entry in February, the pass is probably closed. It runs through the Sierra Nevada mountains of California at about the 10,000 foot level. During the winter snow season, it receives so much snow the plows cannot keep up with it. In fact, so much snow can fall there it presents the danger of avalanches. So, the road is closed. At the end of the winter snow season, the pass is evaluated for avalanche danger and plowed. The entire road is not opened until the process is completed. It is usually plowed and opened by June. Earlier if there was a shallow snow pack, and perhaps not until July if the snow fall was heavy.

Time your trip

If you can time your trip close to the time the road is officially plowed and opened, it is a paradise to behold. Snow can still line the sides of the road and the water runoff from the melting snow is everywhere. And as mentioned before, distant mountains can still have a substantial snow cap on them making your photographs or paintings glorious.
