The Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway runs 469 miles from Virginia to North Carolina. It runs along the top of the mountains which allows great scenic views in all directions. For the tourist visitor, great sunrises and sunsets can be seen there. Driving along the parkway at any time of day is peaceful and pleasurable because the beauty is so stunning.

Although it is not a named national park, it is nonetheless treated like one. The Blue Ridge Parkway is managed, maintained, and patrolled by the U.S. Park Service the same as any national park. It is also protected from commercial development like other parks. In fact, it is against the law to drive commercial vehicles on the parkway without a special permit.

Doughton Park

Doughton Park is an area along the parkway in North Carolina. It is one of the most popular and most visited areas along the parkway. Doughton used to have a hotel and popular restaurant which were closed many years ago. Unfortunately the hotel remains closed. The restaurant reopened in 2020 but sadly was closed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is rescheduled to reopen soon, pandemic willing.

Doughton has always been popular because of its topography. There are campgrounds nearby and hiking trails galore. It always has been one of my favorite places along the parkway.
